DV300 is an advanced course designed for investigators, examiners, and analysts who are already operating at a moderate level of audio/video complexity. This course focuses heavily on what practitioners should know instead of step-by-step training on how to conduct an investigation.
Even so, there is strong emphasis on practical application, with various hands-on exercises integrated into the modules, such as manual parsing, automated extraction for playback, exercises to triangulate and validate automated tool output, and byte-level repair exercises for problematic video files, as well as exercises pertaining to cloud acquisition.
The practical component is crucial for achieving a thorough understanding of audio-visual evidence. Students who have attended AX100 Forensic Fundamentals (or an equivalent) and DV150 - Media Authentication and Analysis with Magnet Verify, will have the foundational and supporting information necessary to successfully complete the course.
Module 1: Course introduction
An overview of what to expect in the course, including module summaries, information about Magnet Verify software and the third-party tools used in class.
Module 2: Overview of the video forensics landscape
Understand the current challenges facing video forensic examiners.
Module 3: Media file format construction and parsing - JPEG
Learn more about the JPEG format specification, along with parsing instruction, and hands-on parsing exercises.
Module 4: Media file format construction and parsing - TIFF
Explore TIFF format specification, along with parsing instruction, and hands-on parsing exercises.
Module 5: Media file format construction and parsing - WAVE
Understand WAVE format specification, along with parsing instruction, and hands-on parsing exercises.
Module 6: Media file format construction and parsing - AVI
Learn more about AVI format specification, along with parsing instruction, and hands-on parsing exercises.
Module 7: Focus on ISO BMFF frame sample tables - Location, size, timing
Video sample tables will be explored, including parsing and joining data that comes from them, and how to use automated tools to auto-compile this data. Hands-on exercises will cover playing, converting, and streaming audio/video, and inspection of metadata and native files to identify duration, frame rate, frame size, aspect ratio, and codec.
Module 8: Video encoding and sequencing - H264
Understand H264 atomic components.
Module 9: Video encoding and decoding - H264 Annex B
See how H264 is packaged for streaming, with hands-on Annex B extraction for playback.
Module 10: Video encoding and decoding - H264 AVCC
Learn how H264 is packaged in ISO BMFF files for storage, with hands-on AVCC extraction for playback.
Module 11: Validating metadata extraction tools
Explore metadata extraction review, automated methods, and tools with hands-on exercises to triangulate and validate automated tool output.
Module 12: Troubleshooting problematic video files - manual
See how video files can be broken, and learn manual approaches for video repair--including hands-on repair exercises. This module is explicitly designed to develop the skill to repair corrupted video files.
Module 13: Effects of acquiring files from cloud and platforms
Cloud acquisition will be discussed, particularly how the approach affects structure, metadata, and authenticity. Platform examples like YouTube and Ring will be used, along with hands-on exercises. This module directly supports understanding the processes for reviewing and forensically acquiring data from cloud-based and social media sources.
Module 14: Video analysis practicum
This module addresses the complex video authentication objective by presenting practical scenarios, analysis of unknown files, authentication of social media acquired video, and provenance identification, building upon the advanced techniques learned throughout the course.
